Earth is a desolate wasteland in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Humanity has been decimated by an invasion of Phantoms, insubstantial aliens that extract and devour the spirits of living things. The few remaining humans have retreated to a handful of cities that are protected by massive bio-energy shields. The beautiful Dr. Aki Ross (voiced by Ming-Na) and her mentor Dr. Sid (Donald Sutherland) have discovered that the energy signatures of eight key Earth spirits can cancel out and destroy the Phantoms. With the help of Captain Edwards (Alec Baldwin) and his band of marines, they must scour the globe for the last two remaining spirits before General Hein (James Woods) manipulates the refugee government into attacking the aliens with an orbital laser that may also destroy the Earth.
Hironobu Sakaguchi’s film is taken from the popular Final Fantasy video game franchise, which is particularly well suited to film adaptation with its series of original stories, but the movie features entirely new characters and settings. And like Toy Story and Shrek, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is completely computer generated. Unlike those cartoon comedies, though, The Spirits Within is a serious science fiction drama with astonishingly human digital actors. Aki, the female lead, appeared in a full-page spread in Maxim magazine’s Hot 100 list–and was indistinguishable from the real-life models. The setting and conflict make for incredible action, but it’s the larger issues, character interaction, and human elements that really make the movie shine. The Spirits Within is not simply a science fiction movie, in the same way that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not simply a kung fu flick. The result is a fantastic summer movie with better action and more emotion than Pearl Harbor, and actors more lifelike than those in that other video game movie, Tomb Raider. –Mike Fehlauer

Second Chorus has one little gem of a moment that has found its way into many Fred Astaire highlight reels. Astaire sings and taps “I Ain’t Hep to That Step but I’ll Dig It” then tries to coax Paulette Goddard onto the floor. She declines, twice, then joins him in a joyous dance. The rest of the movie is not as enticing. Astaire and Burgess Meredith portray trumpet players vying for a spot in Artie Shaw’s orchestra and for the affections of Goddard. The interplay among the three stars has its charms, and there’s plenty of toe-tapping big-band music from Shaw, who plays himself in a substantial part and wrote the Oscar-nominated “Would You Like to Be the Love of My Life” with Johnny Mercer. Filmed in 1940, Second Chorus pales in comparison to the nine-film Astaire-Ginger Rogers partnership that had just ended. Astaire doesn’t dance enough, and a tedious subplot involving Charles Butterworth stretches the movie about 15 minutes too long. No great surprise that like Royal Wedding, Second Chorus has slipped into the public domain and is generally available in poor-quality prints. –David Horiuchi

Summary of Movie
Saw II brings back many features of the original Saw: elaborate sadistic scenarios designed to “test” the victims’ will to live; Tobin Bell as the Machiavellian (yet doomed) serial killer Jigsaw; Shawnee Smith as Amanda, a survivor of one of Jigsaw’s “games”, forced to play again; Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers), whose role as a detective is considerably expanded; and the stunningly godawful dialogue of screenwriter Leigh Whannel. The set-up this time is even more preposterous than before, as a rough-and-tumble cop named Eric (Donnie Whalberg, Band of Brothers) watches, on video monitors, his son trapped in a house filled with nerve gas and a handful of other victims, all of whom are mysteriously connected. Eric has captured Jigsaw, but the implacable killer refuses to reveal where the cop’s son is being held… unless Eric will play by Jigsaw’s rules. Fans of Saw will love Saw II, as the tortures are more gruesome than before; viewers who found Saw either detestable or laughable won’t like Saw II either, as the characters rarely behave like actual people (even when a moment’s explanation would solve a conflict, no one bothers to communicate, even though their lives are on the line). It’s a festival of body fluids, agonized grimaces, and shrieks of pain–and if that’s your thing, this is your movie. –Bret Fetzer

A classic snob with no sense of the lives lived by those less fortunate, he finds himself being dragged all over New York–into neighborhoods he never knew existed, let alone ever visited–on the whims of the kidnapper. Directed by Richard Shepard, the film provides an intriguing character study of a man who begins to understand just how little the people in his life really care about him, mostly because the only people he knows are the ones who work for him (who don’t count, in his mind).
